Kaaz gave me a near heart-stopping experience this evening!
Day was fairly normal - He went out to sun in the morning, came in for lunch, wandered back out to bask untill the sun left the back yard. After his favorite outdoor basking area cooled off, he came back indoors. Everything was fine.
Now, normaly after the sun sets he wants to be let back in to my room so he can fall asleep on my bed or on his heated shelf. Today was different. I can't think of anything that set him off, guess he was just hormonal... He IS in breeding condition right now. Anyway - he first tried to follow me around the house with that "hey baby, you look good" gleam in his eye. I ignored him. Of course I kept track of him, looking out of the corner of my eye - losing sight of him while he's got *that thought* is a very bad idea, and is likely to get me bitten. He stalked around, bobbed, displayed, but after a while realised he was being rejected and stomped off to patrol the rest of the house. All quiet...
Half an hour later, I walked into the bathroom, and found it literaly painted with blood. I mean, smeared all over the mirror, dripped around the sink, trailed over the floor...
First thought:
*Oh My God, my two males killed each other*
*No, wait, I would have heard them fighting, Calm Down*
*I know Guy is in my room, and I'm sure I locked that door*
*Where is Kaaz?*
Walked out of the bathroom, and came face to face with Kaaz in the hallway. Bright colors, showing stresed and really excited, mouth dripping blood. Upon eye contact, Kaaz immediately puffed up and let me know in no uncertain terms that he was gonna rip me a good one if I tried touching him. I turned the lights off, grabbed him anyway, and brought him into the bathroom to check the damage. Nothing obviously sliced open, no ripped off body parts, no near-fatal injuries... In a few minutes he actualy calmed down enough to let me open his mouth for a good inspection.
*Wow, he actualy trusts me for help?*
*Maybe he's in enough pain not to pull his alpha ranking sht with me right now?*
*feels as dangerous as doing dental work on a shark, hope he doesn't decide to rip into my finger*
Turns out, he somehow bit his own lip. He must have attacked the mirror, and his upper lip got snagged on his teeth - two teeth on the upper right side punctured straight through the lip, and one more tooth was caught on the inside. I'm surprised he let me pull open his mouth without a fight! That's got to hurt!
Fixing him up was fairly simple. I used a bit of local anesthetic on his lip, disengaged it from the teeth, and flushed thoroughly with betadine. Put pressure on his lip and gum, stopped the bleeding. Kaaz was EXTREMELY good during the whole thing - once the anesthetic worked, he sat still and allowed me to manipulate his lip and clean it up (after some coaxing, of course). Once I finished and released him, he instantly puffed up and tried to kill himself in the mirror yet again. He was definitely NOT thrilled to be locked up in my room - away from all mirrors. He looks pretty good, and it's not a major injury, so hopefuly he will heal quickly and well. I'll be keeping a close eye on his lip, watching for infection. I suppose the bathroom is off limits now, outside of supervised bath time. I wonder if I'll have to watch him the entire time during his LOOOONG bathtub soaks?
I have to say, that's the WEIRDEST way any of my animals have ever gotten injured!
I have just finished washing off the last bits of congealed blood spatter. Can't sleep tonight...
-Anna *stressed out and frustrated*
-and Kaaz *P.O. big time, cause he didn't get to rip up that iguana in the mirror*
