But, iguanas can travel - I've heard of one case where an ig walked 15 miles and showed up at a neighboring farm in a couple of days. It was in the country, but still, something similar might happen in the city?
Or, what if the "owner" tells them someone picked the iguana up from his front yard when it was out sunning, and he's checking around on the off chance that the kidnapper dumped the iguana somewhere else? I think that would only work if you are in a warm climate tho'... Maybe you could make up some fitting story?
