Its basis is science, led by adults working with youths to learn and improve husbandry of animals, in the past was farm animals, but several students began adding reptiles to that, although they could not compete in the judging contest for their skill in the care of those, like the farm animals student could. This appears to have been changed now with reptiles included
In the programs I have been involved with, the kids had to spend extensive time learning about animals they wanted to raise prior to joining a group and then were monitored by a knowledgeable adult in that field, extensive logs of feeding, health, medical had to be kept by the student. The animals were review often by qualified judges and if not properly cared for, they were removed from the student.
I hope your thought are not the case and that it continues to have the same sound foundation it was started with, if it does, this is an excellent thing for students and maybe us adults can get involved too!
