1) Iguanas NEED light to live. They need UV light to be exact.

Are you planning on keeping the iguana?
If not, call the local SPCA or reptile rescue society and get the iguana removed. Do you know the guy's name who lived in the house before you? You can stick this on to his already criminal charges.. it's called animal neglect.

Can you go to a harware store and buy a screen door? replace the closet door with a screen door, try to make sure the screen is rubber coated and not just wire (he could really hurt himself on the rough wire). This will slowly get him used to you being around, and give him some light. Go to your local pet store or herpsupplies.com and buy a flourescent UV light for reptiles. I suggest a Reptisun Light, and get a light fixture for the size bulb you are getting. This Light fixture or this light fixture would be good (you will need to buy the UVA/UVB bulb for this fixture, do not use the bulb that comes with it). Mount the light outside of the screen door or on the inside of the cage (whichever you can manage).

2) You need to run down to the grocery store and buy some Collard Greens, Butternut Squash, Acorn Squash, Endive, and other dark leafy greens. Get some fruit like blueberries, strawberries, and mango to entice him into eating.

Put this all into a big shallow bowl on the floor or wherever he usually is, and I promise that he'll probably dive into it. It might take him some time to get his stress levels down so he might not eat the first few times you offer this to him.

Don't sit and stare at him, waiting for him (or maybe her) to eat.

3) Find a way to set up a shelf or something like that with a regular bulb in a light fixture like this for heat. Iguanas are TROPICAL animals. They need humidity and heat to live and thrive. Stop by a beauty supply store or your local supermarket and buy a spray bottle. Fill it up with warm water and give the iguana a misting. Offer a heavy shallow dish of water for the iguana to hydrate himself. OR, go to Walmart or some other store like that and buy a large kitty litter pan... fill that up with around 2 inches of water. You will probably have to change the water because iguanas are prone to pass their wastes in water. This can prove to be a convenient "potty". It is much easier to dump the water whenever it gets dirty than to be on your hands and knees scrubbing smelly iggy poo off of the floor =P. If you have any linoleum just lying around, it helps a lot to put that on the floor and makes any messes or accidents really easy to clean up, compared to carpet.

Do you have any pictures of the lizard? If you can get some, it would help a lot.

Best Wishes,

Lesya
