I thought your ideas were insightful, although I'm not saying I completely agree. My iguana seemed a bit happier under the mercury vapor bulb....and he stayed under or near his bulb most of the day, except when he was eating or outside the cage. I am currently back to using the flourescent UV light since the other one went out and he just is not a happy camper. There are other factors to consider (breeding season) but I notice he can't decide where he likes to bask anymore. I have 2 heat bulbs of varying wattage and the UV bulb across the whole cage. Now he wants out of the cage to sit in a sunbeam on the floor (which isn't beneficial since it is through glass) but I think he believes his Mercury Vapor bulb to be a bit closer to the sun than a tube light. The sun is the ultimate, of course.

I would like to get one of those meters myself...it's all very interesting. And don't get me wrong I have used flourescent UV for years and will continue to use it for one or more of my animals, but I don't think mercury vapor bulbs can be pushed aside as easily as that.
