It dries them out. Stick to the triple antibiotic (neosporin). You can also soak them in a betadine/water solution, depending on what kind of wound you are talking about. If any of this is around his mouth, be careful so he doesn't ingest the meds. (like apply it at night while he is sleeping and wipe off in morning with damp cloth). If it is elsewhere on his body, you can probably leave it on.
