In reading this some thoughts come to mind, yes you do have the right to write what you feel and you do have the right to purchase your iguana from a store or breeder. Those are the choices, and I will never be the one to say dont. I know "stardust", I know her total pet situation including the iggy she "adopted" this guy is no different, other than some left over problems from his previous owner, than any animal that would have been purchased. Stardust in rather than taking time from the kids has made the herp hobby a family hobby, all the kids help with the feeding, cleaning, loving of all the animals. Even down to the 2 year old helping to feed the Bearded Dragons crickets. And I know that the new Iquana will get the same attention. And there is nothing like a family hobby to bring the family closer.
I feel the issue is simple a pet store is into the sale of the animal and even though they may portray the animals husbandry is important the bottom line is sell it. Given the volume of types of animials and the differnce of care they cant always provide the proper care in store. And if there seems to be a trend that an animal is selling bring some more in since they are popular right now. The time of year is a good reminder, we have all been made aware that a Christmas puppy is a real cute thing, but 8 months from now the cute puppy no longer carries the attention. Major and a lot of minor stores no longer have puppies and kittens for this reason. Iguanas should be next, since you quoted MK's book, I will just take my feeling from reading her book, and my experience in watching "stardust" with hers. An Iguana takes a lot of quality care, care that the pet store isnt going to emphasize when the sale is made. And care that the owner may not be willing to provide 3 months from now, once the initial excitement of the new pet is over.
And after seeing some of the pics and being such a soft heart I cant save them all, but any and all iquanas I get will be an adoption, and since I agree you cant take them without knowing what your getting into, an adoption from a source like "jiffypop" that provides me with a loved and cared for animal solve as much of the problems as I can.
You sound like an excellent mother and pet owner, and I salute you in that the world needs more of you and stardust. Hopefully this helps portray what I view as a problem.
