Green iguanas (species Iguana iguana) that are often born with some blue highlights
are the ones that fade as they grow older to become a variety of colors.
The ones that retain their color are a grey color or steel color, not bright blue.
The true blue ig is a different species, Cyclura nubila lewisi.
There are less than 100 of these iguanas left in the wild, they are critically endangered
and are only found on
the small island of Grand Cayman in the Caribbean.
Hatchlings of the blue cayman cross or hybrid are found in captivity
for about $350.00 as young babies. When they become adults, they sell for $900-$1000.00 or more
depending on disposition and color.
I have seen pure blue caymans being sold illegally, they go for over $4000.00 and do not belong as a pet, they
belong in captive breeding programs.
Please see this website for info on where the Blue Iguana is kept now.
Fred Burton,Scientific Program Manager of the National Trust for the Cayman Islands, says that
if it were not for this breeding facility, the blue iguana would be extinct in less than ten years.
