Well, where do I start? First off, in re-reading what I wrote I realize I really was tired and how you could have misunderstood what I was saying or thinking that I am younger (tho that I likedlol) In fact I am 42, I am raising 6 children from 18 to 2, not all mine, only in my heart and some were born from me plus I have successfully raise 2 of mine own, one is in the military and one is a chef. I am divorced and work as well. I too do not think that taking care of my ig is hard work, I enjoy it and enjoy every aspect of my life.
The ig I received from Jiffypop was problem free, he does have 10 out of 20 nails missing and his spikes are very small from mites, all was taken care of BEFORE I received him. I realize this forum is not a class room per se, but it is a place where people can come to find out information, so in my mind it is also a learning tool as well as a place just to chat with other ig owners.
The only point I was trying to make, and rather poorly at that, was that I would not, knowing what I know, recommend buying a ig from a pet store, and that if an iglet is wanted they can also be found at rescues. I too, feel sorry for the sick iguanas, can I help them all? No. Can I help to try to educate and stop the cycle of pet stores by not buying? yes. I just said something very simple very poorly in my last post.
If you took offense I am sorry, I didn't mean for that. As I said you were nice to me before when I had asked questions.
Anyway, this again is longer than I had wanted for a short statement, guess I am not like I was way back, doomed in the writing 101
:You know, this FORUM is not a school class so i dont need to pretend i like abused iguanas or sick ones,or react as a school teacher giving lessons to a bunch of children.I write what i feel. No, i dont want to adopt abused and sick iguanas because i dont have spare time and energy to spend trying to rehabilitate them.I dont have good doctors around, i have a full time work, 2 children, husband, house and im living abroad in a foreign country where i dont even speak the local language.Life for an expatriate is already very difficult and a sick pet will add more burden to it.If you want to know if I feel sorry for the sick and abused igs i see around, yes i feel.A few months ago i almost bought a limbless iguana i saw at the local petshop.Yes, his face still hauntes me!But i feel sorry for my family too and i know that each minute i would have to spend in a vet's room will be stolen from my kids and husband. They also need me!Im sorry if my post will make more iresponsible youngsters to buy more iguanas.I have 6 iguanas and in my messages i ve always tried to show to these youngsters that they are pets that neeed to be cared and loved. But im not going to say they are difficult to raise because for me they arent (i've always enphasized the fact that i live in a tropical country!).Im not going to say that they dont make good pets because i dont think so.James W.Hatfield doesnt think that either! It seems some people here want me to make a bad publicity of iguanas but i cannot do that because i dont feel that way.AND as a mother of 2 and knowing how much sensitive are youngsters and children i will never recommend an abused ig or a sick one to them because i know how much they will suffer to raise them. Most dont have money to pay the vet bills, most will feel ashamed of the weird appearence of their pet iguana, most will cry a lot when they discover the illness has recurred! Melissa Kaplan states the same thing in her book (page 26-Should you rescue a sick iguana?)!!!
:But talking about you, in my opinion you are a great kid(i dont know your age) who seems to have a great heart. Its a pleasure for me as a mom to talk to young people like you.Give to YOUR mom my congratulations because she raised you very well!!

:PS Sorry about my English...

::: :too! The few days iglet will not have past traumas and dont hate humans yet.The new born iglet will have more chances to be healthy and will be more easy to tame.Knowing what I know know,if I didnt have any iguana i would by a new born one from a farm or from a good petshop. No rescues for me please!!Im too much attached to my pets to take the chances to rescue a sick or a crazy one!!I rescued Godzilla but he was caught from the wild and 100% healthy!!No past traumas or sickness!!But thats only my humble opinion.

:::::Hey don't get down on yourself. I think we've all done the same thing. I bought Sleestack too...although the pet store had proper lighting and food so it wasn't the worst kind of store. At the time I don't think anyone could talk me out of it because I had rescued before and my rescue had died (and I was heartbroken...convinced a healthy non-rescue was what I needed). I was just being emotional.

::Flavia, please take no offense to this, you have been nice to me and I am just stating my opinion. Maybe where you live you don't have the iguana problem we do here in the states, maybe you just don't want to take more time to an abused ig vs. a new born, or maybe you just want really good looking iggys with no problems, I dont know. You seem like a good mommy regardless of what you want. But here good pet store or not, when one ig sells, more come and they might not get the nice homes you provide for your iggys, they may get homes where they are not taken care of, get sick or maybe even die. I do not want that on my conscience or my hands dirtied because I contributed to it. And like it or not you are contributing to it, whether be a good pet store or bad one. Think about where you are posting, on a public forum that everyone, young and old go to, they hear you say you buy and why you buy and think yeah, I want that, then go out and get one, their friends then want one and so on. How many of these will find a home for life, or have a life? I believe your heart is good, but remember where you are and please look at the big picture. I am not the best writer, not even in college LOL but I hope I am conveying my message well enough.
