Im reading " The Ultimate Owners Manual" and in page 108 the author seems surprised by the fact that its difficult to find pet iguanas in most places where iguanas actually live in the wild.As a Brazilian I can tell you why this happens.Well, I am talking about Brazil, but I SUPPOSE in the others South American countries the situation is the same.
Northern Brazilian are very religious and very superstitious.I dont know why (Im a Southern Brazilian) they are afraid of reptiles. They think reptiles are evil, are representatives of the Devil so they kill all the reptiles they find on their way it doesnt matter if its a snake, a frog or an iguana.Of course, starving people will eat iguanas too but this is not very frequent. The main reason they chase and kill iguanas is because they are afraid of reptiles.Perhaps thats why people from South American countries reacted just like they had seen a ghost when J.W.Hatfield showed them the photos of his pet iguana.
