First some friendly first aid advice....should you ever be bitten by a fire ant the best thing to do is dampen the area & sprinkle on Adolph's Meat Tenderizer. Trust me on this! I'm in Austin, Texas. We have fire ants everywhere..not just sandy soil Joan (I wish!) The Texas A&M folks are working on solutions also, Sue. I've seen pix of newborn calves, foals, etc. literally covered by fire ants. It's sickening. There was a newborn baby left on the steps of a clinic & when found it was already being attacked by fire ants. (Baby was okay) Open fields have fire ant mounds 4 to 5 feet high; it's remarkable & scary.
And yes, they are killing off the Texas horned toad because they are killing off the "normal" ants that are the mainstay diet of wild horned toads.
AMDRO is a product here that a lot of people swear by. The least toxic method that I know of that does work is to mix 3 tablespoons of Dawn liquid to a gallon of water and pour on to the mound. The soap kills them. However, if you use this method, be prepared to stand far away and be on the lookout for ants. They will swarm out once something hits their mound and go for you.
Another word of warning....if you react to wasp or bee stings, chances are STRONG that you will also react to fire ant bites.
The meat tenderizer trick does work...been there, done that, far TOO many times! Oh yes, this same trick works on jelly fish & man-of-war stings also :) 2 yrs. ago I got hit by a man-of-war's tentacles. We always pack the Adolph's in the beach bag. The kids' dumped a bucket of ocean water on my leg & hubby started shaking the Adolph's all up & down my leg. LMAO We couldn't help cracking jokes about preparing mom for the BBQ pit!
