: Joe III I had my horned toad for five years...before he died IF you are at all familiar with horned toads...you'd know that they're whole lives in the wild is usually spent sitting by ant mounds....what type of ant mounds..fire ants/red/black army ants....super high in ascorbic acid...and that's what the horn toad needs to live Much like calcium and Iguanas That's why they are so tuff to raise in captivity & are not recommended..no one can raise those dang ants their primary food source I fed my horned toad crickets dusted with ascorbic acid powder a tip I got from the San Diego zoo. He was the best reptile I ever had...and he is surely missed.
: Anyway...I say go for the horned toads...their great! and Organic!

Now, I know horn toads ants ants.... BUT fire ants are not native to the same region as horn toads. They are an import animal that has no real preditors in North America. If you lived anywhere that had fire ants you would know (the leason is painful) that these little guys are real bad news. The horned toads of Texas are being whipped out because of the fire ants. Because they sit on the wrong ant mound! Fire ants are killing off ground nesting birds, horned toads, they have even killed calves. Now if you have ever owned a cat, you would know that they routinly kill and even eat Toads and frogs. Now if your cat kills and eats a Cane toad it will use up all nine of it's lives. Many cat and dog owners are finding this out the hard way. The cane toad is an import, like the fire ant.
BabyHerp, please do not assume that everyone here is a novice.
