I'm from Nova Scotia as well! I was in Halifax last night actually, but didn't get into the petstore, they usually make me really mad anyway...

I do agree, that Pets Unlimited is a far cry from the horror some people on this forum have described of petstores in their own cities, but they do not take proper care of their animals. Quite far from it actually.

Last time I was in, they were feeding the hatchling corn snakes crickets (*sighs*), need I say more on that one?

The ball pythons were feeding on live mice(ahhh!), and were so skinny that it was scary. You could clearly see their spine and they looked like they were dehydrated and parasite infected. They had about seven 3' toneless ball pythons all in 20 gallon tank. Talk about cramped eh?

The iguanas were on bark, feeding on just shredded carrots IIRC. I played dump and questioned the staff about the care that an iguana would need. They answered all my questions not too bad, telling me that iguanas grow to be 6', live for about 20 years, need to have a huge custom cage built, and that they can become aggressive. I was glad to hear that much anyway.

There were other lizards in there as well, I remember something they called something like a 'butterfly lizard' that was deathfully skinny, I thought the poor little thing was going to die right then and there!

The conditions for these animals have improved though, I just haven't been in to see it yet (I live about an hour away from Halifax) since they started working with the Nova Scotia Herpetological Society. I remember sometime last year someone from Pets Unlimited contacted the president of the society looking for help in the husbandry of their animals there because of all the complaints they were getting. I guess it's a step in the right direction anyway!

I am in no way trying to prove you wrong or anything ;), I'm just sharing what I've seen in that store within the last year or so. If you can update me on the care that these animals are getting, that would be great!

What animals do you keep? I'm always interested in hearing about people who share my interests in the province!

Wow, I think I rambled! Wendy :)
