SVL and STL have little to do with age in a large iguana. We have a 8-9 yr old male Ig that measures 18" SVL, 44" STL (end of tail bit of by a Min Pin... He has been through at least half a dozen different homes, fed dog food, monkey bisquits, and everything else imaginable, etc.

We also have a 5 yr old male who measures 18" SVL, 56" STL. His Kidneys pretty much blew out about a year ago, and he was not supposed to survive more than a few months. Well... He's big, meaner than snot, and healthier than most of the other igs here.

But the one that takes the cake... Is my Whopper. He's 4 yrs old, 12" SVL, and 28" STL. He's by far the runt of the group... But not to say he WON'T grow! He was 2 yrs old when surrendered, and has grown a good 8-10 inches SVL since then. But he'll always be small...

Anyway, what I am saying is SVL doesn't say a lot about age, because there are just WAY too many variables. If you don't know what kinds of care your iguana has recieved throughout his WHOLE life, it's impossible to tell. You can generally say your 4-5 ft iguana is PROBABLY over 4 yrs of age, but even then there are a few FREAKS that grow to MONSTER size within just a few years of age...

My attached picture is small... But that's Wasabi. 4-5 yrs old, and 10.3 lbs. Don't have his measurements handy ;-) But he's just short of a MONSTER!
