Fire destroys mobile home at Shady Lane Trailer Court
A fire Tuesday destroyed Eric Morgan's mobile home in the Shady Lane Trailer Court. No one was at the home at the time it occurred and no one was injured by the fire, according to Bruce Parton, chief of the St. James Rural Fire Department.
Parton said the exact cause of the fire has not been determined.
"Due to the damage we weren't able to determine the exact cause" of the fire, Parton said.
He said the fire started in a room at the rear of the home where Morgan said he had a space heater and a heat lamp that was used to warm his pet iguana.
It was the home owner who first noticed the fire and alerted the fire department. Parton said Morgan had taken his wife to work at about 2:30 p.m. then returned to the mobile home park located off of Old Highway 66 between Rolla and St. James. Morgan was at his mother's house when he saw the fire at his home, Parton said.
The St. James Rural Fire Department received the fire call at 3:22 p.m. and had firefighters on the scene within nine minutes. When they arrived, Morgan's home was engulfed in flames so the firefighters focused their attention to preventing the fire from spreading to nearby homes, Parton said.
"Our initial concern was Mr. Dillard's trailer...We concentrated on the exposure first," Parton said.
The home of Morgan's neighbor, Robert Dillard, received some damage from the heat of the fire, Parton said.
Parton said 14 members from the St. James Rural Fire Department worked at the scene and they were assisted by firefighters from Rolla Rural Fire Department. He said the Phelps County Red Cross is giving assistance to the Morgan family.
