If the iguana got natural sunshine, that is better than UV anyway. And, you always have to factor in genetics. If that iguana had good genes, he may have lived that long despite poor care. Also remember, the oldest iguana in captivity lived to be 29. That is much longer than 10! Perhaps the iguana would have lived that long had he been cared for properly.
If the adoptee iguana has not had a proper diet or regular sun exposure, don't expect him to be without problems. I would in no way discourage you from adopting him, but don't trust the guy completely. Iguana research has come a long way and the newer information should be used.
You could raise your human child with no exercise and on a diet of fast food burgers and fries...they will still grow up, but will they be as healthy as one who is encouraged to be active and eat healthfully?
