RICHMOND PALLADIUM ITEM (Indiana) 13 December 02 Rare Iguana Exhibit (Millicent Martin)
Indianapolis: Plenty of exotic animals can be watched at the Indianapolis Zoo.
Now five endangered Grand Cayman Island Blue Iguanas -- the rarest lizard in the world -- can be added to the list.
The iguanas were born at the zoo in July. A few days ago, the zoo announced the public can now see them. The iguanas are located in a special "baby iguana" viewing area in the Deserts Dome at the Zoo.
The windowed area lets visitors at the Christmas at the Zoo check out the iguanas.
The births are part of Project Iguana, which is one of six current conservation initiatives at the zoo to help several species of Caribbean rock iguanas that are critically endangered.
Fewer than 20 Grand Cayman Island Blue Iguanas remain in the wild population.
