Negative tests does not mean that they do not have salmonella.
Igs (as can most reptiles) can and do carry the bacteria all the time, just do not always contaminate.
As far as a baby, many have raised babies with iguanas in their homes. Precautions need to be taken granted, but common sense and very good hygiene, coupled with a "baby-free zone", and NO free roaming iguana, should solve the problem.
Remember, more people get salmonella from uncooked chicken every year than reptiles. You'd make sure to wash your hands and counters after food prep, so why not your lizard as well.
