What you described is a simple case of classical conditioning. You could teach your igs all kinds of neat things using this technique (experiment- food seems to be a great motivator).
All animals (including humans) have the ability to learn in this way. I've seen pigeons play ping pong, mice play basketball, and rats take boat rides using this type of method.
They certainly are smarter than most give credit to and I don't mean to undermine anyone (or anyig), I just thought it was interesting. :) (I know, I'm a dork) :)
I bet I could teach Spike to do a jig for a piece of bread!! :)
