In Reply to: She is making eggs! Help, I am getting conflicting advise! posted by Meggy's Mom on March 12, 1999 at 23:12:14:
: Hi:
: I took Meggy to the vet yesterday. She has about 4 weeks to go before laying eggs, according to the vet. He advised me to force feed her a liquid diet of pureed greens (collards mostly with vitamins and calcium added plus water) to keep her health up. I gave her about 1 1/2 Tbs. of the green goop last evening and again tonight. Said the eggs will drain her body of calcium and I need to make sure she gets some--don't let her just not eat for a month. Likened it to a pregnant woman whose abdomen is full of a baby--still needs to eat. Said she was very healthy--in excellent shape. Yet I got literature sent that said not to force feed them.
: He also said that he favors spaying only to save the iguanas life, not as routine surgery because of the dangers of anesthesia. She is to return in two weeks. After reading all the postings on this forum dealing with eggs, I wonder if there exists an iguana in captivity that lays eggs annually with little fuss and trauma! Also I read that iguanas live in captivity to be 20 years old. Has anyone ever had one live that long? What is the oldest iguana out there among the people posting? Well, tomorrow I am off to build the egg box! Hope I survive this whole affair LOL!
