to see so many iguanas dumped, up for adoption, in rescue etc! What brings this on? Well, I decided to do some more research on other types of reptiles, with the idea of taking in a couple more as I get bigger enclosures built for Tempest and Spike, to go into their current ones. I don't know if I could handle another iguana (yet), so I thought I'd look into other types of reptiles. What I've found this afternoon, makes me so upset, sad and angry.
Adoption lists are FULL of people begging to GIVE homes to snakes, beardies, chameleons, geckos, saying they'll take in any. Which is wonderful!! These animals are barely available and they are adopted. Flip to the iguana side. The lists are full of the exact opposite, people looking for homes for iguanas, people asking to get rid of iguanas, iguanas being up for adoption for months and months... it just makes me so sad. I called a few of the local humane societies to see if they had anything in need of a home, nothing, all they ever see is the occasional... can you guess? Iguana.
I realize I am totally preaching to the choir here :P I guess more what I want to say, is thank you to anyone who's taken in one of these beautiful creatures, that someone else lost interest in or dumped!!! I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't had this list to help me through Tempest's rocky entrance into my life. I can't say how much I love to see photos of people's healthy iguanas, and hear about how well other rescues are doing. Why do I get the feeling that I'm going to end up with more than one :)
