Tail tip question

A while back, when Tempest's tail whipping was really bad, he had a cut in the tip of his tail, only a couple of mm long. I've kept an eye on it, and last night I noticed it was not healing and a bit brittle. I was worried, and planning to give the vet a call, until....

Today he gave a heck of a crack, and the part of his tail I was worried about, is off, again only a few mm of his tail, less than 1/4". It looks clean, not bleeding, scabbed over, but should I call the vet anyhow? Or wait a few days and see how it looks? The tail looks healthy right up to the end, flexible and good scale coverage, not at all dark or shrunken, I'm assuming he'll grow the tip back but I'd like a more knowledgable opinion for sure. If his tail did get at all dark, shrunken or brittle, of course I'd take him straight away to the vet. I guess my concern is should I be pro-active and do it now, or wait a bit and see how it goes?
