I know everyone probably gets tired of seeing me recommend the same things over and over but with upwards of 25 igs on top of OTHER desert or tropical reptiles in my program at any given time I simply have to go with what I believe are the most cost effective (not necessarily cheapest) most efficient ways of spending money around here. Which is why I'm always throwing out the RHPs, merc vapor bulbs and ultrasonic humidifiers. Sure, those three pieces of equipment and any associated things will run you upwards of $200 but you *shouldn't* have to spend any more money on any of them for a minimum of one year. The bulbs have a so-so prorated one year warranty on them, the humidifier also one year and the RHP's 10 years. The Enerjoy RHP that I first bought 3 years ago hasn't cost me anything more than the electricity to run it. Plugged it into the temp controller and haven't had to think about it since. And with a 10 year warranty the $109 that it cost me depreciates out to a whopping $10.90 per year - big deal...;)
On top of efficiency, they ARE safer, IMO, than a CHE. We've all heard stories of CHE's causing fires - and yes, I actually DID put a phone call in to the guy in England a year or two ago who had a fire in his flat because his ig "Rex" somehow dragged newspapers into his enclosure and onto the CHE. Running all out, full steam you literally CAN put your hand on a 150 watt RHP panel and have enough time to say "Ouch" before you have to pull your hand away. The beauty of that is that that's the worst that will happen... No burning flesh left behind, no worries of scarred lizards, etc....
I buy all of our reptile supplies at HerpSupplies.com, yes another groan from the crowd because everyone must by now think that I get royalties whenever I throw the business name around, but they really are the best option that I've found. Service is great, prices are some of the best I've seen anywhere. Sure you can always find a cheaper price on something somewhere but the reasons I keep going back to John is the service, the knowldge of products, the service, and the simple fact HerpSupplies.com doesn't deal in live animal sales. Supplies are all they do. Since he lives all of an hour away from me I have the luxury of taking a nice ride up into what passes for mountains in New Hampshire (as opposed to, say, Colorado) and actually pick my orders up personally and get to hang out with everyone a bit. It's neat to run up there because enough time lapses that I can notice all the work they've done on their new location and John's son, Darwin, (yes, he really is ;)) looks like he's grown 4 feet every time I go up, and the racoon and bear stories get funnier as seasons change.
For your enclosure, (wow what a long way to go for an answer, huh) I'd say either a 100w or 150w Enerjoy panel. Control it with either an ESU or Alife temp controller and you should be all set. Were I given this choice and not familiar with the units, I'd opt for the larger unit simply because I prefer to err on the side of "overkill" whenever possible. It's always easier to use less power/energy when you have it than to need more power/energy when you don't have it...;) For the extra $3.10 per year that it would cost to jump from the 100w to the 150w.....
Sorry, Linda. You caught me on a short sleep day right when the coffee kicked in.... ;) Feel free to drop me a line directly if you'd rather if you have any more Q's.... Just be forewarned that this may be what you get in reply.....;)~
