:While firefighters have yet to determine the fire's cause, Chris said suspicion centers on several "bug bombs" he set off to rid his home of a moth infestation. Because of the bug bombs, the Bushinski family had left their home earlier that day.
:Chris said the bug bombs may have ignited a hot light that had been in a terrarium for the iguanas. Chris had placed the iguana light on the floor before he left and covered the terrarium with towels to protect the lizards from the chemical fumes.
That thunking sound you hear is the sound of my head hitting the desk at the sheer stupidity of
1. People using too much bug bomb for the space. Doing so can and has in the past caused explosions and dramatic loss of property. (And I'm not even going to touch on the many far-less-toxic-to-every-living-thing ways of dealing with moths, mites, fleas, etc.)
2. Using any type of chemical bomb and leaving any type of pet behind is inappropriate - no matter what the the product label or exterminator say. Animal metabolize things differently than do humans, in many cases taking far longer to detox than humans. Animals should be vacated from the premises not only during the chemical use but for several days after chemicals are used to allow the humans to air the place out before bringing the animals back home.
I've lost a house and possessions (and some pets) to a fire. I sympathize with everyone who has to go through that type of experience.
Buut, people have to learn that, while some is good, more isn't necessarily better, and never trust manufacture safety data on chemicals!
