My vet’s male iguana had a similar problem where he was continually damaging the end of this tail by whipping things to the extent where it never healed up. What she did was buy some rubber tubing to slip over the tail until it healed over. Personally I’d be more afraid they’d get their tail caught on something and be more likely to rip it off in a panic or that it would be stressful on them, but worked in her case. Although I don’t think it’s anywhere near as bad in your case yet.
If he’s mainly doing it when you go to get him or you’re messing around in his territory, you could use a towel. I have a towel I occasionally use to get Murry if she’s in a bad mood. This kind of relates to your other post about associations, but if I don’t have the towel and she’s off roaming the house somewhere she’ll put up more of a fight, but if she sees the towel she’ll either start back to her room or give up and let me pick her up.
