If you pick the place he spends most of the day, than 1 place can be enough. Using a couple is safer I suppose. If you want to use only one than you have to think like an iguana...where is he going to like to spend the day? I can help a little....the highest basking area with the nicest heat (that isn't too hot, although they like it hot). Close to your heat lamp is always fairly safe. Just make sure the area you choose is higher than the other areas...it is in their nature to climb as high as they can!

You mentioned below that you would use several lights for heat. Unless you live in a really cold area, you may want to try only a couple at first since a closet will probably heat up pretty well! Of course a thermometer is your best bet to know all the temps. Just remember to give him a place to go that is a bit cooler like in the mid to lower 80's if he gets overheated.
