The pointing isn't a bad approach but just be careful. My last iguana who was a very sweet male except during breeding season went after my husband in a similar situation...latched on and tried to mate with his arm! Right before it happened, Hubbie was getting mad and pushed him away, yelling at him. I guess he took this as a challenge, and went for him.
My technique has always been to rub the head and dewlap until they close their eyes (many times even a kiss on the head). I talk sweetly to them but am basically surrounding them with my presence. I think they believe me to be dominant. I show no fear or anger. When they close their eyes, they are submitting and hoping you go away. Now all of this is well and good, but there are times when they are so wound up that it is best to leave them alone for 10 minutes to cool off. You have to use your judgement.
One day when yours is bigger, he may challenge you. I am still waiting to see if Sleestack tries to...I've had some hints of it but so far so good.
