Hi Linda,
I am also near Chicago and it can be really difficult to maintain the proper temps and humidity with our cold winters. I am currently going through the same thing as this is the first fall/winter season with Sebastian's new cage and in our new home. It's a trial and error kind of thing until you find what works. I'm still working on it and figure it will take a bit to perfect everything.
As for shedding, they will shed at any time. Sebastian shed the left side of his face about a month ago and the right side just shed last week. One of his feet is shedding right now (the other foot and all the toes shed a few weeks ago). Who knows which part of him will start to shed next. I'm just happy he is shedding. To me, that's a good sign!
