but I'm at school taking notes for a paper and the computer shut off my access to email and the floppy drive. This is the only forum I belong to, so I have no choice but to post my notes here and download them when I get home. I'm really really sorry if any of you have bothered to read this. By the way, I've posted a real message above.

THings to put in the paper:

The work is onomotopoetic in the sense that it is more concerned with following the

movement of Strauss's concept than with following a form or harmonic outline. In his own

explanation of the piece, Strauss builds an image of a man who lies on the brink of death and is

distraught to the point of agony because he has not fulfilled the grandiose, idealistic goals he

has set for himself. At the same time, he looks fondly upon images of his childhood and other

pleasant memories.
Strauss constructs a theme for each of the man's states of being. A placid, Major theme

represents the dying man's peaceful memories and moments of reprieve from pain; a tumultuous,

minor theme

As is characteristic of Strauss's approach to the tone poem, these themes evolve so

drastically that they are sometimes only recognizable by their tonality, or by the mood they seem

to set. Their juxtaposition creates a tension that follows Strauss's narrative in striking

detail.
Discuss how this works in the piece according to Strauss's narrative.

This tension between the agony of death and the beauty of life culminates as the dying

man realizes that his lifelong dreams can only be realized through death, for they are too

profound to be understood by mortal man. As he comes to this understanding, the tension between

agony and beauty combine in a tremendous climax that represents his glorious passage from world

into the next.
Discuss how this works in the piece according to Strauss's narrative.
