That's what I call a smart girl!!!I hope my daughter will be like that when she grows up!!

:I don't see the similarity b/w microwave wavelength and UVB wavelength. They are on the opposite sides of visible light in the E.M. spectrum!
:Microwave ovens use low frequency, large wavelength. According to http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mwfaq.html, microwave oven waves have a frequency of 2450MHz (2450,000,000Hz) therefore, if I calculated this correctly, their wavelength is 1.2 decimeters (0.122meters). (formula is, wavelength=c/v, where c= speed of light and v= frequency. )
:UVB is high frequency, small wavelength. UVB wavelength is between 280nm and 320nm. That's 0.00028 - 0.00032 millimeters or 0.00000028 - 0.00000032 meters. Extremely tiny!
:By the way, I don't disagree with you about the amount of UV passing through windowscreen - after all you have a UV meter and I don't. (By the way, what range of wavelengths does your meter detect?) Could you go out on a sunny day and take readings of the sun? One reading through a piece of windowscreen, and one without? I would love to see the numbers!
:Thanks!

::I'd have to go back and refresh in order to be completely accurate but the simplest way I can put it is that the wavelengths of UVB rays are "simply" too large to fit through the small openings of window screening. It really is as simple as the screen in a microwave oven door. That screen is what prevents microwaves from escaping the unit. Same principle applies to UVB and window screen....
::And, unfortunately for reptiles, any amount of UVB that DOES manage to penetrate through window screen is not even as much as the current mercury vapor bulbs can produce.....
