It does go through window screening, but the amount that gets through the holes is a lot less, because some of the light is blocked by the screening material. The denser the material, the smaller the holes for the light to go through, and more light is blocked. For sunshine this may not matter as much - I'd guess the amount of sun's UV that goes through the screening is still higher than is put out by most lamps. However, with a lamp with already low UV output, the amount of UV blocked by window screen can be critical for the health of your ig.
1/2 x 1/2" hardware cloth blocks out smaller amounts of UV because of it's larger mesh size, plus it holds up well for iguanas. Big Igs easily shred through window screen.
