Unusual iguana found in Taveuni
Friday October 18, 2002
Investigations are continuing into an unusual finding at Navivi Village, Qamea Island, Taveuni.
The unusual finding was a green coloured creature believed to be an iguana.
Police public relations officer Unaisi Vuniwaqa said the creature, which was about two-feet-long was found and caught by a Navivi villager on October 14.
AI Vuniwaqa said the creature was found swimming ashore to the village.
AI Vuniwaqa said the creature appeared to be an iguana, but the villagers were alarmed as that was the first time they had seen such a new species in their village.
She said the creature lives on land and also in water.
“It is believed that the tourists who usually visited the island may have imported the creature into the country,” she said.
AI Vuniwaqa said that investigations were continuing and the creature had been forwarded to the Government Veterinary Officer at Koronivia Research Station in Nausori to confirm whether the creature was a local or a foreign one.
Results from Koronivia Research Station is yet to be released.
