:WOONSOCKET -- Josh, the iguana with wanderlust, is safe at home again today, nibbling on romaine lettuce instead of car bumpers.
:Jacob Forget, 10, said he was in school yesterday morning when one of his teachers, knowing of his fondness for animals, told him about an iguana that was featured on the front page of The Call.
:A fifth-grader in Bernon School, Forget asked for permission to leave school briefly to get a copy of the paper and, lo, there was Josh, his pet lizard, pictured in the arms of Animal Control Officer Doris Kay.
:"I was speechless," said Jacob.
:Jacob's iguana was leashed to the porch of his Park Avenue home Tuesday afternoon when he somehow wriggled free and went for a stroll in traffic. Animal Control Officer Kay retrieved the pale-yellow reptile after some residents who live near Park Avenue and Bernon Street scooped him from traffic.
:"He wasn't abandoned," said Kara Marie Forget, Jacob's mother. "He's our pet. He ran away."
:Actually, he was abandoned -- by somebody else, about two months ago, said Ms. Forget. That's when her son found the friendly reptile wandering in the back yard. Her son, who spent last summer babysitting his teacher's turtles, adopted the iguana. Jacob also has a pet hampster and a Labrador retriever.
:Ms. Forget said Josh is a very friendly iguana who likes to eat bananas, apples, cantaloupes and all kind of greens.
:After discovering Josh's picture on the front page yesterday morning, Jacob and his mother went to the animal shelter behind Fire Station No. 2 on Cumberland Street to bring him home. Jacob said Kay let him borrow a small caddy for the lizard for a little while. It's something Jacob says he needs to keep his animal from running away again, but he can't afford to buy it right now.
:"The animal control officer said we could borrow it for a few weeks," said Ms. Forget.
