: I run a reptile rescue/adoptions program in
Virginia. Last weekend I brought home a little
iguana that needed to get out of his current home
ASAP. He's a male, about 2' long total who was
kept in less than ideal circumstances.
: He's my first iggy and even though I have ready
everything I can get my hands on (internet and
books) over the last 6 months, I'm STILL not sure
I'm doing everything 'just right'.
: He's in a 55 gallon aquarium (what he was in,
temporary home ONLY) and comes out each evening
for several hours of exercise, playing, and
general interaction with me and my significant
other. His temperature hits low 90's during the
day and low 80's at night, and he is misted
several times daily with a large water dish in his
home to help with humidity. (Again, not ideal,
but it's temporary... )
: My main concern is his diet... reading Melissa
Kaplan's articles is enough to make even the most
confident person feel insecure! This little guy,
dubbed Carlos, had been fed a diet consisting
primarily of iceburg lettuce, carrots, peas,
peaches and pineapple BEFORE I picked him up. His
diet now consists of a 'salad' of kale, collards,
mustard greens, turnip greens, turnip, carrots,
yellow squash, and zuchini run through the food
processor and minced small so he can't pick out
any one thing (I hope). Is that okay? It's hard
to find much more in the greens selection around
here, unless I"m shopping in the wrong places..
Also, Ms. Kaplan recommended people vitamins
(crushed centrum) as opposed to reptile vites.
Anyone using this? Any thoughts?
: As for his home. Sometime in the next few weeks
I'll be building him an enclosure to live in. I
think Carlos is going to be a permanent fixture in
our home, not an adoption. So, as soon as the
weather warms up enough to break out the power
tools, he'll have a MUCH larger home...
: ANY suggestions, comments, criticism, etc, would
be very appreciated.
