As far as how their digestive system compares to monitors, I'm not sure. I do know that many iguanas are prone to eating things they shouldn't. My last iguana couldn't be kept on anything but tile/linoleum. He ate newspaper, papertowels, dirt, rocks, sand, toys, money, clothes, and my bra! My current iguana is not like this so I keep him on newspaper, although he is rarely on the floor. They do lick everything and accidentally eat a lot. He ingests a lot of my long hair by accident. Many of these substrates are not the most sanitary either. It is easy to disinfect tiles or take away newspaper to clean underneath. Other substrates harbor parasites, mites, and bacteria far easier.
