new Monitors are usually terrestrial animals, and some of them even NEED dirt to dig in. Also, monitors have a snake-like tongue which they flick. Iguana's literally lick stuff. Their tongue is sticky and its really easy for them to ingest something which shouldn't be.
I prefer to use linoleum on the floors of my iguana cage. It is really easy to clean and is a lot more sanitary than carpeting or newspaper. I am also a bit paranoid about the ink in newspaper. Carpets have so many nooks and crannies and places for bacteria to grow that it'd be one big cess pool of salmonella and other yucky stuff eventually... no matter how hard you scrub it.
That's my 2 cents.
