Hi Shanna!
I planned on steralizing the branches using just boiling water, but it was a major rush getting ready to bring Myka home, and I ran out of time. I did however use a metal wire brush over the entire thing to remove any loose bark that could be hiding any nasties. The wood was in really good condition when we found it, the trees were just starting to die, so the wood hadn't really started to detiorate much yet. They are ironwood, so the wood is really tough anyway. Good luck! Wendy :)
