Iguana lizards given out as prizes at fair

A first-place prize at the Wayne County fair has some people concerned.
Iguanas can live 15 years and grow to six feet.
A game vendor hands out six month old iguanas to anyone who throws a ball into a fish bowl.
Some are worried the iguanas are not properly taken care of at the county fair and that some winners won't know how to care for them.
"I'm not happy that they will just give away tropical pets at the fair to people that don't know what they're getting into and most people won't invest and try to figure out how to take care of this pet,” said new iguana owner Tami Hill. “They'll either be turned loose or killed."
"To get everything that you need to let the iguana thrive, it's going to be about $200 startup if you don't have anything and some have gone over that,” said Valerie Alphin of Pet Supplies Plus.
Game operators say they give out an information sheet with every iguana and winners have the option of choosing another prize.
Iguanas can live 15 years and grow to six feet. They need a large living space and heat lamps to regulate their body temperature. Plus they carry the bacteria salmonella.
Anyone handling a reptile should wash their hands with antibacterial soap.
