And I suppose also the sun helps to kill the mites...In Brazil people use to put their rugs on the sun to keep them free of moths.Sun kills fleas too!!

Almost all animals in the wild have both external and internal parasites. The difference being in the wild the parasites also have predators which help to keep their numbers in control. There are actually mites that prey on other mites. Also the igs are constantly going into and under water which helps to wash them off. The main problem in captivity is that the ig is kept in an unnatural environment in an enclosed situation where the mites reproduce and the ig is constantly exposed to them and can't just leave the area. Therefore the ig gets more and more infested.
