In Reply to: How do you get the iguanas to stay so green? posted by bearded_dragon on September 29, 2002 at 14:31:06:
That's a question I hear a lot when I have Zok out in public. People talk about an ig being yellowish or brownish in color. It generally turns out to be a care issue, bad diet, no UV light etc. There are slight color varations on igs from different areas of their range and they tend to lose some of the brighter colors as they get larger. No offense but it sounds like you might need to do a little bit of research before you jump into this. James Hatfield's Green Iguana the Ultimate Owners Manual and Melissa Kaplan's Iguanas for Dummies are the 2 books I generally recommend. Keep in mind that these are NOT the easiest animals to deal with especially for a beginner. They need large cages, high temps, and humidity, special UV lighting (and those bulbs aren't cheap!) They get LARGE and can be dangerously aggressive. Add the possiblility of expensive vet bills. They should live a long time if taken care of properly, the oldest I know of was 29! This is a lifelong committment. Although some of my non herping friends do say that commitment is a very fitting word for what should be done to those of us that are crazy enough to live with these green monsters. LOL!
