:Sambo the iguana always wears a smile
:This is my pet, Sambo. I got him two years ago when he was only eight inches long and lived in a fish bowl.
:Two very close friends gave him to me for my 50th birthday. Well, what else do you give a 50-year-old woman who has everything? A lizard! The "green dog" or "the cat with no hair."
:Sambo is a very unusual pet for a woman to have.
:Over the past two years I have read a lot about iguanas. I learned what he likes to eat, his sleeping habits and his moods. I have had to make my house lizard-proof and make accommodations for sleeping arrangements with many heating pads around the house.
:Sambo is almost four feet long and weighs about six pounds. He is probably larger than normal because he is a free roamer.
:Sambo sleeps on a heating pad on top of my night stand. He marked his territory about a year ago.
:Men are usually squeamish about picking up Sambo, but the ladies love to hold him and let him sit on their shoulders.
:When I come home from work, Sambo runs to the patio door to greet me.
:He also likes to be held by anyone, his head rubbed and his back stroked all the way down to his tail.
:He is used to being hand-fed and loves to eat anything green. Sambo is box trained. I give him a bath daily and his nails are trimmed weekly. He loves to be cuddled and will lay for hours in my arms while I watch a movie.
:I do not recommend an iguana as a pet for young children. The iguanas are moody during their breeding season and are very aggressive. They can tear your skin apart with their sharp teeth in only one bite.
:Sambo is a joy to my life. Even with a big mouth and sharp teeth, Sambo has a smile on his face at all times.
:Who knows what the future holds for us? Iguanas rule, especially in my house.
