Sounds like this canine needs kennel/enclosed area of his own at home (one that he can't dig under perhaps concrete substrate lol ) ...for those days/times when your away. Unless you wanna call a dog obedience trainer for advice about that digging!
Can get used kennels/dog runs real cheap . Get him used to it now...so you won't have those issues when you leave. Neighbor can still check on him feed him etc
May want to look into boarding him at a public kennel..(lots of good ones just the few that give em a bad rep) it can get costly..but I wouldn't take the pooch with me...animals at family gatherings usually aren't invited or welcome anyway ...sad but true
