Not always, but usualy, as stated in books or webpages, a darker iguana is either cold or stressed. Darker colors, such as black, absorb heat faster, which is why coincidentally, Galapagos iguana are commonly black. The ocean water cools them down quiet a bit, and so they need to re-absorb the heat to process the food etc...
Also, stressed iguanas will show darker coloration. When choosing a baby igauan from a tankful, the brighter colored, more energetic is recommended.
Now, it is also true that older specimens tend to darken with age. The reason why I did not state it is because it was not related to the topic below, so I apologize.
However, to be "that old", a male iguana should be between 5.5' to 7' in length, and a female 4' to 5+ feet.
Unfortunately I cannot help u much with iguana aging, but is is rather safe to say that an "over the hill" iguana would be over 10 to 13 years of age.
