I honestly didn't, Spike went over to Lion himself. He probably didn't notice that it was a lion, just something comfy to sit on. :)
My sister has a chicken (as a pet) and Spike is HORRIFIED of the stupid thing. Pecky (the chicken) should be the one that is afraid. Its just a little chicken now (only a couple of months old) but if Spike even hears her peeping he puffs up, his dewlap is big, and he puts his head as high in the air as he can and as an extra defense, he closes his eyes!! :) He must have had a past life experience with a chicken or something. :) We don't let Pecky anywhere near my room (my door is always closed anyway).
Maybe you should just try another animal. I gave Spike that frog to lay on because it was green and I thought it might be familiar. I don't know. :)
