:I am looking for any experiences from those that have used mercury vapor bulbs as their UV source. I am trying to do some research and get a general consensus of positive and negative feedback regarding these bulbs.
:1. What brands have you used? (and positive/negative feedback)
ZooMed PowerSun 160 Watt floods
:2. Did you use a thicker, well insulated extension cord with this light?
No special extention cord but one that is UL rated.
:3. Does your light fixture containing this bulb have a UL sticker on it and contain ventilation holes in the top?
Yes and yes. It's a standard brooder fixture.
:4. If you've had more than one, how many broke or gave out early? Have they cut off when they are too hot?
I've had 3 different bulbs quit working in the 16 months I've been using them. I sent them back and they sent me replacement bulbs promptly. I've never had a bulb break, explode, or malfunction except for not lighting. I did have one shut off automatically for a short period of time (15 minutes).
:5. What kind of UV sauce did you use before the MV lights?
ZooMed 5.0 and Eagle 5.3
:6. Did you notice improvement in your animal? How so?
I see the most noticeable improvements in rescues that come in with the beginnings of MBD. When placed under these lights and given proper diet, calcium supplementation and injections if the MBD is severe, I see quick results. My pet animals seem more active and eat well.
:7. If you are a vendor that sells these bulbs...do you get a lot of complaints or returns compared to your other UV lights?
Not only have I found these bulbs to be a benefit to the animals but they also allow you to use only one fixture which helps bring down the electric bill.
