4-foot iguana found in St Thomas - Saturday 07, September-2002

EXOTIC LIZARD: Residents had to use a rope to control the powerful four-foot iguana found in a tree in Hopewell Tuesday. (Picture: Charles Grant)

The next time you reach into a tree for that sweet berry, be careful that what you “pick” is not a four-foot iguana.

Such was the case of two Hopewell, St Thomas men on Tuesday when they pulled the reptile from the greenery of a wild tree near their homes.

Kirk Johnson and Coldrick Cumberbatch battled with what residents described as a “vicious” lizard as they tried to get it into a cage.

“They got some rope on a stick and put it around its neck and drew it. Then they had to put another piece of rope on its tail because it was using it to hit you,” said one resident.

When a SATURDAY SUN team visited the area the iguana’s captors were at work. But one resident said that the large lizard changed colour depending on its environment.

“Last night it was black and white, now it is a light orange-ish, creamish and black colour,” said one woman who asked not to be identified.

As it lay in its temporary cage, the iguana would either snap or lash its tail at anyone who dared to go too close.

But residents are fearful that it may not be the last one they will find.

One said iguana eggs could be found in the nearby gully and other residents recalled that a similar reptile was found between late last year and earlier this year.

Officials from the Barbados Wildlife Reserve are to take the reptile into their care.
