measuring stick you would want to use if you're thinking about an iguana, but rather maximum size. A mature male can go between 5 and 6 feet, and from 16 to 20 lbs. Females are a little smaller, but iguanas are almost impossible to sex as iglets, so you should be prepared to deal with LARGE.
Iguanas are NOT suitable for beginners because of extreme husbandry requirements. (Special diet, special lighting, very large enclosures, etc) However, you will find that the only iguana species available readily is the green iguana. Others such as rhino iguanas are available from specialty breeders at a premium price.
If you really are serious about a green iguana, you should consider rescuing an ig from someone who isn't serious. There are many out there needing homes. Check with your local vets. Please don't buy one, as this only adds to the problem.
