No, they are a horrible first pet. They get 6 feet and take a lot of time and space. They can be violent and are expensive to keep.
It is good to see you are researching before taking a new pet into your life. If you really like reptiles, perhaps you should try a small snake, a gecko, or a bearded dragon. Bearded dragons are awesome, but you will still need to be able to pay for vet bills to take care of parasites and buy the proper lighting, cage setup, and food (crickets, worms, veggies, and pellets).
