While this is a terribly annoying and stupid occurance, there are still books being published and SOLD that suggest the diet of animal protien. You know those $5.00 pamphletes that they call books that are often found in pet stores? They suggest even pinkies for iguanas. I have on several occasion been buying rodents for my snakes or water dragon and had people just ask how old my iguana was. They simply assumed that was what was getting fed the mice. Another thing is that people can be TERRIBLY lazy, and I can promise that many listen to pet stores. Hell the 'largest reptile display in the midwest' still suggests a diet of monkey chow and iceberg lettuce with dusted crickets occasionally. And that store is supposedly the leader in the midwest...

ps... If it makes you feel any better, I have a few shows coming up and I am sure I will deal with at least 5 people feeding animal protiens and 20 people feeding ice berg lettuce for each of my 3 shows....
:I was just in the grocery store on my lunch break buying people food and in line a couple noticed my tats of an Ig and snake.
:Of course started talking about I'gs and they have a over five foot male, or so they claim and got on the subject of food.
:Well of course I start spouting about the greens, veggies and so on and this man pulls out a large of the wall brand of dry dog food and said "well this is what we feed ours".
:I must have had a horror look on my face cause they started to defend their choice of food. I asked if this Ig had been to a reputable vet, how long had they had him and so on.
:What is wrong with folks, so much information on caring for Ig's and other reptiles etc out there. I was ready to cry cause they said they had him over 2 years and he is very healthy, yeah right for how long damage has already been done.
:Now to calm down and try and get some work done here.
