I'm not defending this couple, because with all of the information out there now there is no reason to be feeding their ig dog food, but when I first got my ig (now, this was almost 13 years ago) the reptile vet told me to supplement his food as a juvenile with soaked dry dog food (at that point it was believed that a small amount of animal protein was good for juvenile igs). Information about raising iguanas has changed a bit since then and is much more readily available. I didn't have the advantage of internet access at that point. I bought a bunch of books and could learn only what the information available contained. A bit of time of eating some dog food early in his life didn't harm Sebastian - he just had his blood and fecal tests and they all came back perfect. Hopefully that couple will now recognize that it is time to take their ig off of dog food and move it to more nutritious foods. They may not have responded to you very well at the store, but perhaps you have given them some food (pardon the pun) for thought and they will begin some research on their own. And if not, you should feel good knowing at least you tried to educate them.
:I was just in the grocery store on my lunch break buying people food and in line a couple noticed my tats of an Ig and snake.
:Of course started talking about I'gs and they have a over five foot male, or so they claim and got on the subject of food.
:Well of course I start spouting about the greens, veggies and so on and this man pulls out a large of the wall brand of dry dog food and said "well this is what we feed ours".
:I must have had a horror look on my face cause they started to defend their choice of food. I asked if this Ig had been to a reputable vet, how long had they had him and so on.
:What is wrong with folks, so much information on caring for Ig's and other reptiles etc out there. I was ready to cry cause they said they had him over 2 years and he is very healthy, yeah right for how long damage has already been done.
:Now to calm down and try and get some work done here.
